Based on the understanding that the Earth system is a coupled system of natural and human components, the European Alliance aims at developing and promoting integrated approaches to global change research based on WCRP, IGBP, IHDP, DIVERSITAS and ESSP science.
Furthermore, the European Alliance wishes to focus on specific European problems that arise from global change. For instance, the impact of climate change is one factor of global change, wheras others are related to demographic changes or economic changes. The effect of these changes on Europe's environment, population and structure is of prime interest to the Alliance.
In addition, although the regional focus of the Alliance lies on Europe, the Alliance plans to link its coordinated activities to the research approaches of other countries/continents (e.g. Africa).
