In 2008 the secretariat of the European Alliance was established in Germany and affiliated to the Scientific Secretariat of the German National Committee on Global Change Research during the following two years.
Due to the appointment of a new chairperson, in September 2010 the secretariat moved to Portugal and is now affiliated to the Scientific Secretariat of the Portuguese National Committee for IGBP - Global Change, located at the Universidade Atlântica.
